What NPI actually is
The National Provider Identifier (NPI) is a unique ten-digit number assigned by the US government to individual healthcare providers and healthcare organizations. It's used across billing, credentialing, and regulatory reporting — which makes it a genuinely reliable anchor point for confirming that a person is a currently active, registered healthcare provider.
What NPI cross-referencing checks
When a data vendor says a record is "NPI-verified," at minimum it should mean the provider's name, specialty classification, and practice location have been cross-checked against the public NPI registry (NPPES). This confirms the person exists as a registered provider and that their listed specialty matches official classification.
What NPI verification does not check
NPI registration doesn't confirm a current email address, a working direct-dial phone number, or which specific practice or hospital the provider is affiliated with today — NPI records can lag behind real-world job changes. A record can be "NPI-verified" and still have a stale email or an outdated practice affiliation.
Why the distinction matters when buying data
A vendor that stops at "we cross-reference NPI" has confirmed the person is a real, registered provider — a useful baseline, but not proof the contact details themselves are current. The more meaningful claim is NPI cross-referencing plus independent verification of email deliverability, phone validity, and current practice affiliation.
Questions to ask a vendor about their NPI process
- Is NPI cross-referencing used to confirm identity and specialty only, or also to validate current practice affiliation?
- How often is the underlying NPI match re-run against the live NPPES registry?
- What additional verification (email, phone, affiliation) happens on top of the NPI match?
The practical takeaway
"NPI-verified" is a floor, not a ceiling. It's a meaningful signal that a vendor is doing more than scraping directories, but it should be one layer in a broader verification process — not the entire pitch.
