Volume isn't the problem — qualification is
Most medical device sales teams don't struggle to get a list of physicians. They struggle with lists where 60% of the contacts were never going to buy, because the data wasn't built around the fields that actually predict fit.
The fields that matter for device sales specifically
Procedure volume signals. For surgical and interventional devices, knowing whether a physician or facility performs a meaningful volume of the relevant procedure matters more than specialty title alone. Two cardiologists with the same title can have completely different procedure volumes.
Facility type and OR access. Ambulatory surgery center, hospital-based, or office-based — this determines whether a physician can even adopt a given device category, independent of interest.
Purchasing influence vs. clinical influence. In many facilities, the physician who uses a device isn't the person who approves the purchase. Value analysis committee members, department chairs, and procurement contacts need to be identified separately from end-user clinicians.
Current technology or competitor usage where available. Knowing what a facility currently uses shapes both messaging and realistic timeline expectations.
Facility-level IDN affiliation. Device purchasing decisions increasingly happen at the health-system level. A contact list that doesn't map individual facilities to their parent IDN misses this entirely.
Why generic B2B databases fall short here
Platforms like ZoomInfo or Apollo are excellent for general B2B outreach but weren't built with clinical procedure data or facility-level purchasing structure in mind. They'll give you a title and an email — not whether that physician's facility even has the procedure volume to be a realistic prospect.
What a properly built device sales list looks like
- Physician or facility matched to specialty and sub-specialty
- Procedure volume tier where data supports it
- Facility type and purchasing structure noted
- Separate purchasing-influence contacts flagged distinctly from clinical end-users
- Verified current email and direct phone, not a general facility line
